During a fabulous weekend of trialing for Bill Blose he faced a quandary in the final hour Regional championship run-off because he was the owner/handler of BOTH the top 2 dogs, Peach and Ace. Bill handled Ace while CJ Hamilton challenged him by handling Peach. In exciting final action Ace and Bill put up a 4-4 and a back BUT Peach and CJ topped Bill with a 5-5 and a back! Overall, Peach racked up 10 first place NSTRA points in 3 days by winning the Regional Qualifier trial on Friday, then winning the Regional Championship on Saturday and topping it off by winning the Day After trial on Sunday! Ace and Peach are littermates out of FLATLAND'S GEORGIA GATOR and FLATLAND'S IMA SNICKER TOO. To cap that off, Bill and Debbie Carnahan had teamed up to buy Peach in the Calcutta so Bill also won the Calcutta !

2016 Arizona Regional Trial and Day After Trial
March 18th and 19th Arizona held our Regional Elimination trial on the Empire Ranch near Sonoita, Az. On Sunday the 20th we ran a "Day After Double" open trial for the first trials of the new season. Unusually hot and dry weather conditions approaching 80 degrees prevailed all weekend even though a week before there was snow and two days after temps were back in the 70's.
All of the Arizona Region bird planting and judging is done on horseback since we cannot use ATV's on our Public land trial grounds. After dogs were in the blind for the very first run on day 1 our bird planter Julia, an extremely experienced rider, rode out on her horse and didn't even get one bird planted before the horse went wild and she was bucked off, slammed her shoulder on the ground and, we later learned, broke her collar bone! Julia is such a trooper, she stayed with our group all weekend after a short visit that evening to the emergency room. Meanwhile her husband, Patrick, immediately volunteered to plant the entire weekend so we could proceed, which meant he now couldn't run dogs on our Day After trial. Fantastic people, Julia and Patrick!
Anticipation was evident as the dogs made their runs, everyone hoping to make the first cut to get into the finals. Scores were so tight, at the end of the first day less than 20 points separated the last four dogs to make the cut. That evening we held our Calcutta bidding prior to the next days runs. Half the dogs making the cut are NSTRA champions, two of them 3X Champs, while the other half were all up-and-coming dogs on their way to becoming champions. Bidding was dramatic, and when our new High Point dog Emma came up, bidding rocketed up for this years High Point winner John Trout's Emma, even leading to an informal collaboration of folks who joined together to bid on her and they ended up winning the Calcutta! All told, the Calcutta brought in over $800, half of which went to our club.
The second day started out much less dramatically than the first and there was a happy, but intense, anticipation as the dogs made their runs for the second cut. The top 4 dogs were determined with John Trout's Emma dog and Brian Rebello's Ruby winning out to run the final hour. Emma and Ruby are litter mates, both 3X champions, out of John Trout's Rose Mary and Brian Rebello's Santan's Elhew Max. Both dogs worked their best in the final hour and each came in with a 4-4. Folks were holding their breath as the final scores were tallied and it was so close the scores were checked 3 more times before posting just to be sure. In the end Brian Rebello's Ruby scored 795.5 while Trout's Emma scored 799.5! John Trout and Emma topped off an impressive year, winning both the High Point competition AND the Regional Championship, a spectacular trialing season for John Trout and Emma. Besides our Region's usual High Point award John Trout was also presented with some "special awards" personally from Region President Debbie Carnahan, a box of dog biscuits for Emma and a "Johnny Walker" award for John Trout.
The other dogs claiming placements were an impressive young up-and-coming shorthair named Tessa Rose run by Marty Elliott who got second runner up and Brian Rebello's young dog, Wedo, claimed third runner up.

Dogs making the first cut on Friday were: 1st Place, Tessa - Owner Marty Elliott, 2nd Place, Wedo - Owner Brian Rebello, 3rd Place, 3x Champion Ruby - Owner Brian Rebello, 4th Place, Garrett - Owner Dave Hackman, 5th Rocky - Brad Christensen, 6th 1X Champion & 1X Past Regional Champion Yotie - Arlette Hennesey, 7th 3X Champion & 2016 High Point dog, Emma - John Trout, 8th 1X Champion JoJo - Brian Carnahan, 9th Shooter - Jim Schroeder, 10th 2X Champion & 1X Past Regional Champion Grimmy - Rocco Petrocco, 11th Buck - David Hackman, and 12th 1X Champion Ruby Tuby Teapot- Debbie Carnahan.
We would like to thank our GREAT judges for the Regional, "Diving" Paul McCawley from Idaho and Steve Crabb of Arizona for such a great job of judging on horseback, consistency in scoring and a truly fair test of all the dogs.
A raffle and silent auction was held with many nice items donated by region members and great items from sponsors such as Purina, Sportsman's Warehouse and Ponderosa Hotel Management, that helped our club substantially. Special thanks to Marty Elliott (over/under shotgun), Arlette Hennesey (Training collar, hunting vest), Debbie Caryl-Pardee (handmade NSTRA quilt), John Ruland (case of AA shotgun shells) and everyone else that donated for the club.
Our club also received a $500 donation from Dave Stevenson of Red Rock Feed Company for a catered dinner coordinated by our members David & Tina Cook, which allowed us to have an excellent barbeque dinner from Brushfire BBQ of Tucson, Az delivered to our remote location on the Empire ranch, over 40 miles from their restaurant in Tucson.
Our Region elections were held and Debbie Carnahan was unanimously re-elected President of our Region, Randy Caryl re-elected as VP, Debbie Caryl-Pardee re-elected as Secretary, our exceptional Treasurer Todd Zondlo re-elected for his numerous consecutive term, board members Brian Rebello and Brad Christensen re-elected to our Board and two new board members were elected, David Cook and Jim Schroeder.
A "Day After Double" open trial was run on the following day, Sunday, where we had a couple of young, brand new members run their dogs for the first time and post very respectable scores, Caleb Spanier getting a 307 with "Bella" and Kevin Nitti pulling off a 414 with "Calvin" and a 318 with "Charlie", we look forward to seeing them again at our future trials!

Arizona NSTRA concluded its 2013 trial season with the running of its regional trial May 2 and 3, 2014 in the mountains of Northern Arizona. 32 dogs and handlers competed. Mike Porter from Southern California and Kevin Creadon from the Rocky Mountain Region traveled to judge the trials. This year the conditions were tough. Friday shaped up to be hot with little to no wind at times. The winner of Fridays trial and qualification was Doc handled by Mike Kitchens. Second place was Prince handled by Bob Henson. Third place went to Yoti handled by Arlette Hennessey. The field of 32 dogs was narrowed down to 12 for Saturday’s continuation.
Saturday was a better day for scent conditions. Many birds were found in the first braces of the day, but only 6 dogs advanced to the third round of competition. Braces were drawn for the top 6 and the field was replanted. After all was said and done in this round, some placements were separated by only a ½ point. 5th Runner up was Sid handled by John Trout. 4th Runner up was Ruby handled by Debbie Carnahan. 3rd Runner up was Yoti handled by Arlette Hennessey. 2nd Runner up was Belle handled by Alan Churchwell. The championship run-off was narrowed down to Duke handled by Jeff Dixon and Zoro handled by Bob Henson. Both dogs ran the whole hour finding many birds, but Zoro was able to pull off the victory. Congratulations to Bob Henson and Zoro as this years’ Arizona NSTRA Regional Champion.
Another champion was also crowned this weekend in the Arizona region. Alan Churchwell and his drahthaar Belle clinched their 1st NSTRA championship after the elimination rounds of Saturday’s trial. Congratulations Alan and Belle.
After all of the trials were completed, our yearly awards banquet and business meeting were conducted. Entrants and families enjoyed barbecue and other tasty food that was provided by the region. Also new officers and board members were elected for the new trial season. We would like to thank everyone that supported our region and hope that the next year brings even more success!

NSTRA Rules for Regional Trial Elimination Eligibility:
a. Those (dogs) placing first, second or third and earning points for the placement (in an Arizona Region Trial), as in a full 24/32 dog
trial. In a trial that earns less than 3 points, only pointed placements count.
b. The current Regional Champion (last year’s winner) is automatically qualified for the next year’s
Regional Elimination trial regardless of point count. (BOD Oct 2013)
c. NSTRA Champions must run in their home region
d. Out of region dogs may participate as long as they have earned points within your region and
have not received points in their home region or attained Championship status.
i. Dogs that receive points in their home region must compete in their home Regional
Elimination.
e. Dogs may enter only ONE Regional Elimination trial per calendar year.
Contact the Region President or Regional Trial Chairman if you have questions about eligibility or to sign up for the AZ Regional trial.
The day after the Regional trial concludes there is a regular trial, usually a Double/Double, and it is the first trial of the new year and any NSTRA member may enter that trial. Contact the Regional Trial Chairman to sign up for this trial.
